SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 2

Unger, Jackson, Oliverio, Mitchell, Love, Hunter, Facemyer,
Sprouse, Minear, Burnette, Craigo, Bowman and Redd)
Requesting the Division of Highways rename the section of Route 8
in Monroe County, presently known as Moncove Lake Road, "W.
Marion Shiflet Parkway".
Whereas, W. Marion Shiflet is a lifelong resident of Monroe
County; and
Whereas, W. Marion Shiflet served his nation with pride and
distinction during World War II in the United States Army Signal
Corps; and
Whereas, In 1952, W. Marion Shiflet served as Mayor of the
Town of Union, Monroe County. In 1964 he was elected to the House
of Delegates; and
Whereas, The political expertise of W. Marion Shiflet was
quickly recognized during his tenure in the House of Delegates. He
rose through the ranks of leadership in the House of Delegates,
serving in such notable positions as vice chairman of the House
Committee on Finance, the House Committee on Agriculture,
cochairman of the Joint Committee on Interstate Cooperation, member
of the Joint Committee on Government and Finance, senior member of
the House Committee on Rules, Majority Leader of the House of Delegates, Majority Whip of the House of Delegates and Speaker pro
Tem; and
Whereas, The legislative knowledge and expertise of W. Marion
Shiflet have been recognized nationally. He served on the
Executive Committee of the Southern Legislative Conference and, in
1986, was elected Chairman of the Southern Legislative Conference.
He also served on the Board of Governors for the Council of State
Governments; and
Whereas, Since leaving the Legislature as a member, W. Marion
Shiflet has served as a lobbyist during the legislative sessions;
and
Whereas, It is fitting that a lasting tribute be made to such
an outstanding public servant as W. Marion Shiflet whose dedication
and commitment to the people of West Virginia have spanned nearly
four decades; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Legislature hereby requests the Division of Highways
rename the section of Route 8 in Monroe County, presently known as
Moncove Lake Road, as "W. Marion Shiflet Parkway" in tribute to an
extraordinary man who has contributed much to the citizens of West
Virginia through his active participation in the legislative
process; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is requested
to have made and be placed signs identifying the section of Route 8 in Monroe County, presently known as Moncove Lake Road, as "W.
Marion Shiflet Parkway"; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby
directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Secretary of
the Department of Transportation.
